Hoefnagels Fire Safety is a member of the association Brandveilig Bouwen Nederland (BBN) and has a broad network of contacts who are active in the construction industry. BBN consists of leading suppliers of fireproof building materials and constructions. Due to the diversity of its members and their expertise, BBN is a consultation partner for all disciplines within the construction industry. From contractor to architect and from customer to controlling authority.

Hoefnagels Fire Safety is one of the signatories of the BBN Code of Conduct. Among other things, it says that:

  • Our fireproof products and services meet at least the requirements set by the Buildings Decree for the application. This means that fireproof products and services are provided in accordance with the applicable legal (harmonised) standards.
The fireproof performance of the products and services can be demonstrated by means of a certificate or assessment from an accredited institution.
  • If it is not possible to provide the fireproof products and services with a certificate or an assessment from an accredited institution, we explicitly warn our customer in writing in advance.
  • If desired, we can, together with an accredited institution, provide a statement about the expected fireproof performance/behaviour of the product in question in the event of fire.
  • We provide our customers sufficient information about the area of application of our fireproof products.
  • We provide advice and make our knowledge available to stakeholders.
We provide our fireproof products with proper assembly instructions and, if necessary from a fire-resistance point of view, with maintenance instructions.
  • We provide training for installers/companies, when this is necessary or desired for fire safety.
BBN members are not only responsible for their products, but they also share their knowledge about the products through the publication of 'The Essential Building Control Points (De Essentiële Bouwkundige Controlepunten)'.

CE under EN 16034 for industrial and commercial fire doors and their impact
On 1 November 2019 the standard EN 16034 became mandatory, which means that from now on the doors covered by this standard must be provided with a CE marking for fire-resistant and smoke-resistant properties.

In the past 3 years of the coexistence period, a great deal of work has been done to clarify this — first on how to certify and then on what to certify. Many of the underlying standards were and even still are not yet complete, so the development of products has stagnated during this period. To date, the European Commission is still in consultation with the various working groups in order to clarify the application of EN 16034.

It is currently possible to certify a door on the basis of EN 16034, but this can mainly be achieved with new tests and test reports according to EN 1634-1. The first version of the test standard 1634-1 was issued in 2001. Since then, many tests have been carried out with positive results, but these regularly turn out not to be fully usable for certification under EN 16034; even tests carried out in 2017 do not qualify for certification in many cases. As a result, many products with the correct fire-resistance and/or smoke-resistance properties are currently not formally allowed to be supplied under CE (EN 16034) without any change in quality.

The endorsing market parties are striving for a correct CE marking. However, the lengthy lack of clarity and thus the remaining time span have proven to be too short to be able to get the entire product range done in time. It goes without saying that the market parties are all striving to eliminate this as quickly as possible in the coming period.
